Coming off one the coldest holiday seasons on record has us thinking about summer. We’re sure we’re not the only ones..
In fact, we’re well into our booking season for the summer of 2018. We know many of you are ahead of the game and already planning your summer fishing trip too. Most of our trips tend to fill up well in advance, so if you’re tossing around taking a trip this summer, now’s a great time to start planning.
After all, there’s no better way to cure those winter blues than by planning a summer fishing trip (except maybe going on a warm weather fishing trip), which is why today we thought we’d tell you about one of our favorite times to fish in Alaska.. July!
Top 5 Reasons to Fish Alaska in July
- Grand-Slam Potential. Overlapping run timings makes mid to late July the best opportunity to catch the salmon grand-slam; all five species of Pacific salmon landed in a single fishing day. There aren’t many rivers in the world where you can do that. In fact, last season at Alaska West we had over a dozen guests tackle the slam, one of which even landed two grand slams in the same day.
- Family Discounts. We love the opportunity to fish with families. So much so that from July 15th through July 29th we offer a family fishing discount at Alaska West. For every regular paying family member, we’ll offer an additional family member 50% off. Math isn’t our strong-suit, but we’re told that’s the same as two anglers for 25% off each. Either way its a great deal.
- Best Weather. Yes, Alaska is known for unpredictable weather. However, July typically brings out the most comfortable weather of the summer. Could the temperature drop into the 40’s? Sure it could. But it can also hover in the high 60’s to mid 70’s during the day. In July it tends to be the latter.
- Less Bugs. A common question we receive regarding fishing in Alaska is “when aren’t there any bugs.” Our answer? “Never, it’s Alaska.” That being said, ask us when there are the least amount of bugs and we’ll answer mid July, without question. Mid July falls between prime mosquito and no-see-um times making it the least buggy month of the season.
- Diverse Trout Fishing. Impatiently waiting for the steady stream of salmon eggs and flesh yet still hungry from the long winter thaw, trout in July can be targeted using a whole bunch of different techniques. Skating mice, stripping streamers, or dead drifting egg/flesh patterns with a single or double-hand rod, from either a boat or on foot can all be productive during July.
