When it comes to fly fishing gear, many are surprised to hear that the fly line is arguably the most important component of any fly rod setup. That’s right, no matter how expensive or ‘technologically advanced’ your rod, without a properly matched fly line, the rod will never perform to its full potential.
Saltwater anglers understand this better than most, as an appropriate fly line can make all the difference when dealing with difficult conditions on the flats. However, with the amount of options available, along with the price of premium lines approaching triple digits these days, choosing a line can be difficult.
We’ve written a lot of posts on some of our favorite fly lines at Andros South in the past, but we know many of you out there have a lot of experience with a bunch of really cool fisheries as well, so we want to hear from you!

I really don’t have a favorite. All seem to not float like they used to but I just came back from Tierra del Fuego and used a Rio Versa Tip with a floating head on my 8 wt Winston Boron 3. Superb for the wind and I’m going to use it in 3 weeks at Andros South.
Make/Model: It’s actually the Rio Quickshooter, both 8 and 9.
What Do You Typically Fish For: Bonefish, Permit
Where: Acklins, Bahamas
Why is it Your Favorite: Pro: Easy loading close in for both DIY and guided. Floats well. Con: $$$, Had distal loop fail once on a medium bonefish after two seasons. Test them for each trip!
I have the Rio Quick Shooter on one reel and Airflo Bruce Chard’s Tropical Punch line on my other reel. I prefer the Airflo Tropical Punch.
