The Krókurinn (pronounced crow-kur-in, Icelandic for “the hook”) isn’t just a fly—it’s a nod to brutal weather, sharp wits, and the endless ingenuity of anglers chasing chrome in cold water. Born on Iceland’s volcanic rivers by Gylfi Kristjánsson, a renowned Icelandic fly tier, where Arctic Char swing through glacial currents, the Krókurinn carries a minimalist beauty that hides its lethal intent. Sparse materials. Bold contrast. A profile that cuts through water like a straight razor.
This fly earned its reputation on Arctic Char, but quickly found its way into the boxes of die-hard trout, salmon, and steelhead addicts who appreciated its clean look and uncompromising purpose. It’s as much a philosophy as a pattern: simple, strong, and built to move fish when fancy dressing fails.
Today, we’re breaking down how to tie this northern classic—step by step—so you can bring a bit of Icelandic swagger to your home waters.
Materials List:
- Hook: Firehole 316 sz 14-10
- Beadhead: Firehole 4.0
- Tail: Pheasant Tail Tips
- Bump: Hare’s Ice Dub
- Body: Medium V Rib
- Thread: Veevus 8/0
Step 1. Place your bead on the hook and wrap your thread to mid shank.

Step2. Take a small clump of pheasant tail, measure the tail appx. ½ the length of the body. Tie in and down on to the bend of the hook. Make a couple of wraps under the tips to prop them up.

Step 3. Make a tight dubbing noodle and build a small bump.

Step 4. Tie in your v rib at the bead head, I push it into the back of the bead and then tie down to the dubbing bump.

Step 5. Using touching wraps, wrap the v rib forward. Tie off and put a small amount of uv resin over the thread.

Completed Fly.
