Bonefish House

Just like us humans, bonefish can live in lots of different places.  This spot, however, is prime real estate. Why? Sparse mangroves.  Deep water close by.  Point to collect food.  Good sun.  And it just looks really fishy. June’s Best Kept Secret – Trout!

During June at Alaska West, most of our guests are really, really fired up about catching king salmon on swung flies.  That’s with good reason – our king fishery is a pretty darned unique resource. But in all that excitement about catching kings, it’s easy to forget that the trout fishing this time of year…

Seams and Backeddies

In a typical river float with Chile West, anglers have the opportunity to fish lots of different types of water using many methods. Occasionally there will be an area where the river dumps into a rock wall and makes a 90 degree turn creating a big backeddy.  Here the current swirls around creating seams that…

Spring Creeks in Chile

One of the great things about fishing in Southern Chile is that productive fisheries and close-to-zero pressure often add up to fishing that’s not so technical. On the other hand, it can be fun to have to work at it a bit!  If you like tiny water with super challenging casting conditions, ‘Spring Creek Y’…

There’s no sweat on anyone’s brow? You could even say that these guys are bundled up? These shots were all taken during…

The Rio Emperador Guillermo

As Chile West ends its journey down the Carretera, one of the last rivers on our list is the Rio Emperador Guillermo (Gee-air-mo). This is one of the smallest rivers we fish and in reality could be called a stream as it is strictly a walk and wade fishery. The 18 miles of river is…

South Andros from Above

We were lucky enough this week to enjoy a visit from Louis Cahill to Andros South.  Louis is a fishing fanatic who just happens to have more than 30 years’ professional experience with a camera. We”ll be seeing more of Louis’ photos over the next few months, but we’re kicking things off today with a…

The Rio Manihaules

As Chile West travels further south, the Carretera Austral meets up with the Rio Manihuales (pronounced man-yee-hwal-ace and sometimes spelled Maniguales). Located midway between our Cisnes and Coyhaique destinations, the Rio Manihuales is another on our long roster of fishing possibilities. Starting from the confluence of the Rio Toqui and the out flow of Lago…

Big Runs

The Lower Dean River that we fish at BC West – the mile and a half section between the canyon and the river’s mouth – has some really big runs. The one pictured above is called Ross Island.  Fishing the whole thing thoroughly will take you at least a couple of hours.  It tends to…
