Fly Tying: Sockeye Caviar

This segment of Fly Tying is provided by Mossy’s Fly Shop, serving Alaskans since 2010. If you’re traveling to Alaska for a Fly Fishing adventure and need fly fishing rods, reels, lines, tips, flies, hooks, boots, waders, etc. to complete your Alaskan Fly fishing experience, or have questions, they have answers. Stop by and See Mike and Brian at Mossy’s Fly Shop in Anchorage. Email mbrown@mossysflyshop.com or call (907) 770-2666. www.mossysflyshop.com.

When it comes to Sockeye harvesting, we cannot help but play around with patterns and really try to church them up, it makes going out there for them a little more fun.

Our good friend Art Peck and I were discussing the Mini Krystal shrimp pattern one day, and he told me how he uses UV polar chenille for the body, which he finds to be rapid and straightforward.  I sat down last summer and began experimenting with what he had told me.  I added some rubber legs and dumbbell eyes, and wrapped the chenille around the hook; it looked shrimpy and cool!  Took a few out in a few different colors, and boy oh boy, that fly swung through was absolutely lit.

Originator: Mike Brown Tied By: Brian Davenport, and Column By: Mike Brown, Mossy’s Fly Shop

Material

  • Hook:  Gamakatsu SL45 Sz 6
  • Tentacles: Chicone Crusher Legs FFl. Chart Barred/Clear
  • Dumbbell Eyes: Hareline Brass Eyes Black Small
  • Body: UV Polar Chenille Chartreuse (Pearl, Pink, Orange, or Medium Krystal Hackle Blue)
  • Thread: Veevus 140 Chartreuse

Step 1.  Start your thread behind the hook eye.  Take one rubber leg and fold over the thread, tie both legs down to the top of the shank.  Tie the start of the bend.

Step 2. Tie in your brass eyes just inside the hook point.

Step 3. Tie in your polar chenille and take the thread to the hook eye.

Step 4. Wrap the polar chenille forward, figure 8 wrap around the eyes, tie off behind the hook eye, and whip finish.

Optional Step: You can trim a taper on the body towards the hook eye if you would like a nice look.
