Gear Review: Umpqua River Grip Big Nip

The Umpqua River Grip Big Nip

There are various companies to choose nippers from, and part of getting the best one is getting the right one for the right job. For this gear review, we look at the Umpqua River Grip Big Nip. Let’s get started.

The River Grip Big Nip is just that, Big and easy to grip. Rain or shine, the large profile makes it easy to find, grip, and nip while on the river. The River Grip Big Nip is made with surgical-grade Japanese stainless steel, a rubberized grip, and sports a hook eye cleaner. The rubberized grip does make a difference, especially when fishing in wet conditions. It cuts mono leaders well, larger diameter tippet, and even fly line. It did, however, struggle with very thin tippet material. You never get a clean one-time nip while trying to nip super-thin tippet. For larger hooks, we found the hook eye cleaner to be firm and sturdy. For smaller flies, the gauge of the hook eye cleaner is too thick. The lack of flat-faced blades makes it more challenging to get a really close trim on the tags.

The Pros:

  • Wider cutting Blade
  • Non-slip grip works well
  • Nips leader material well
  • Very well priced
Profile & Grip

The Cons

  • Lacks a wider flat face blade for a close trim
  • Thinner diameter tippet can be challenging to nip
  • Hook eye-cleaner limited to Larger flies
Hook Eye Cleaner

Overall, the River Grip Nip Nippers are perfect for those who fish for larger fish and use heavy leaders and tippets. They are easy to find, grip and nip. The larger profile and rubberized grip do make a difference. It does struggle with nipping smaller tippets and giving tags a super close trim. The hook eye cleaner is limited to larger hooks. With that, the best part is the price point. At $11.99, it is very affordable. So get it for Salmon, Steelhead, and large trout fishing. Big fish…Big Nippers.
