Tarpon Connectivity

Screen Shot from BTT’s “Journey of the Silver King”

Last year we posted on Bonefish and Tarpon Trust’s new brand campaign which focused on the connectivity between different bonefisheries. It explains how populations of bonefish throughout the ocean are connected thanks to fish migrations and oceans currents.  Those factors do not just apply to Bonefish and the BTT follows up with an education video called “The Journey of the Silver King” which also focused on the connectivity between Tarpon fisheries and how to preserve their habitat.

I recently read a great article written by Jenny Staletovich that touched on the same topic.  Tarpon are these incredible animals that are very valuable to the U.S. sportfishing industry which has earned them protection in the U.S., but these fish do migrate outside of U.S. boundaries where fishing is “catch and kill”.  There are other sport fish like Tuna or Billfish that have laws to protect them in international waters, is it time we do the same thing for fish like Tarpon or Bonefish?

We encourage you to read the full article here. The movie “Journey of the Silver King” is posted below. If you’re viewing this in a newsletter or a reader, click here to be redirected to the video on our website.
