The Beauty is in the Details // Brook Trout Edition

Photo: Danny Frank

Did you know that a Brook Trout is technically a char, not a trout?  One thing I bet you did know about Brookies is that when they get dressed up in their spawning colors, their beauty is almost unmatched.  My favorite part of a Brook Trout is the sharp contrast on their fins, most notably their pec fins and tail. The bright white along the edge suddenly meets a dark black that fades into a reddish orange as it gets closer to the body of the fish.  Another over looked feature that Brook Trout boast are the “Blue Halo” spots scattered throughout their body. If you look closely, you will see a range of colored spots on Brookies, some of which are outlined by a blue circle. While we don’t get to see any Brook Trout in Alaska, we do get to see their cousins, the Dolly Varden.  Can you see the family resemblance?

Recently caught some 2-4 lb. Brookies on the sucker spawn a week ago . Noted that some caught had halos and some were completely missing the blue halo. Small Adirondack Lake 100ac with the sucker spawn upstream in a river that flows directly through the lake.
