Flats Fishing Wisdom from Josie Sands

Andros South guide, Josie Sands, by Hollis Bennett.

Today we present you with a nugget of flats fishing wisdom courtesy of long-time Andros South guide, Josie Sands. Josie’s been putting people on bonefish, big bonefish we might add, for well over twenty years. Needless to say, when he’s got something to say, we listen!

When asked recently, what’s the key to catching bonefish? Josie’s answer was profoundly simple:

“That’s easy – Concentration, Communication, and Relaxation.”

Wow. We couldn’t come up with a more concise, yet spot on, explanation of the fundamentals of bonefishing if we tried. Do each of those well, and you’re in the game. Let us elaborate..

  1. Concentration. Things can happen at any time on the flats. Your target is always moving around so there’s a good chance something could swim by at any point of the day. Staying focused so you’re always ready the moment an opportunity presents itself is key. Many shots are missed while the mind is wandering. Concentrate!
  2. Communication. Getting on the same page as your guide is key to success on the flats. Four eyes are better than two, and there’s no substitute to effective communication between the angler and the guide. Work as a team and you’re bound to catch more fish.
  3. Relaxation. Don’t get us wrong, there are times when you need to present the fly quickly. However, we’d dare say most shots are blown by rushing a cast than not by not presenting the fly quick enough. We get it, it’s exciting! But more often than not, a quick sloppy cast doesn’t get very far. Relax, take your time, and make your best shot possible. Don’t let ‘bonefish fever’ get the best of you!

Regardless of where you’re fishing, whether for bonefish, permit, tarpon, or any other species on the flats, remember – Concentration, communication, and relaxation.. Its as easy as that!
