Today we present you with a friendly reminder of a simple tip that most anglers are well aware of, but often forget until its too late – like when your rod breaks!
Multi piece fly rods are designed such that when assembled tightly together, the overlapping ferrules result in the desired overall taper of the rod. However, rod sections can easily become loose throughout the day, especially under situations which involve many change in directions while casting (ahem, flats fishing, spey casting, you name it).
As rod sections begin to loosen, a substantial more amount of stress is placed on each ferrule when under pressure. The result? A broken rod with seemingly very little load on the rod.
So, in between runs, every time you hop out the boat, or in between shots on the flats, take an extra second to ensure each rod section is tight. Trust us, you’ll break far fewer rods.
