As many of you are well aware, over the last few years, fiberglass has been making a bit of a comeback in the fly rod world. Why? Because they’re really fun to fish! Heck we’ve already seen folks fish glass for bonefish this season. That got us thinking, we had to take it one step further..
So, we put down the graphite for good, and picked up the bamboo.
Well, not really.. But last month we did have the pleasure of meeting Bill and Russ Scheider, a fishy father/son duo at Andros South. Bill builds gorgeous custom bamboo rods in his spare time, and actually designed a few specifically with the flats in mind. He brought a few down with him to try out, and aside from being works of art, they actually worked really well too! He put a hurtin’ on our bonefish population here on South Andros, and we just thought that was pretty darn cool.
In fact, this past April we had not one, not two, but three guests of ours fished bamboo rods for bonefish during their trip, and guess what.. All caught plenty of fish!
But, as the old adage goes, “it’s not the arrow, it’s the archer.”
