Point Your Feet at 12 O’Clock

Fly fishing for bonefish from a flats boat

When poling for bonefish, being on the same page as your guide is key to success on the flats. That way, when you hear the sweet words, “Bonefish, 11 O’Clock, forty feet,” you know just where to look.

Therefore, knowing where you’re pointed on the ‘clock face,’ is important. Always making sure your feet are pointed dead ahead at 12 O’Clock will ensure you will be working off of the same direction as your guide.

With fast paced bonefish action, dealing with fly line, trash talking with your boat buddy and the like, it’s not uncommon for the position of your feet to become disoriented throughout the day. We see it all the time. Guide calls out, “bonefish, 11 O’Clock, 40 feet,” angler starts casting, guide says “no, 11 O’Clock, look at your feet,” angler looks down and realizes he’s not facing the front of the boat like he thought.

So, in between bonefish, take a second to make sure your feet are pointing at 12 O’Clock before the next fish is spotted.
