Polarized Glasses: Double Up!

Big Flat by Louis Cahill Photography
Tip was too tacky to photograph. Here’s a big flat! Photo: Louis Cahill

Longtime contributor and friend Bill Lenehan sent us a great, let’s just say ‘unconventional’, tip for flats fishing that he picked up from Andy Mill.

Double Up!

Here is a tip that will increase your ability to see fish on the flats at greater distances and see each fish more clearly. Wear two pairs of polarized sunglasses at the same time, both on retainers like Chums, with one pair having a lighter lens color. Not the most stylish look, I admit, but you will be able to instantaneously adapt to different light conditions.

Test it out: as you pull up to a flat, or a cloud moves overhead, judge which pair cuts through the glare better. If the day is generally bright, try one pair in dark brown and another in copper. If it is generally overcast, go with a copper and one in contrast-enhancing yellow.
