BC West Report from Steven Brutger

Brutger Steelhead
Steven, ruined.

We love it when our guests take the time to write up their experiences at our lodges.  Steven Brutger joined us at BC West this year, and apparently he liked it!

Thanks for the great account, Steven!

The Dean- An Account from a Wyoming Trout Fisherman

It’s 11:30am on a Friday and I’m sitting at my desk in Lander, Wyoming when the phone rings. A familiar voice on the other end of the line tells me that there is an open spot on a trip to the Dean and asks me if I can pack my bags and be there in five days. Despite work, family obligations, and an expired passport I say yes.

The stress of putting together logistics on short notice, in particular jumping through State Department red tape to renew the passport, hardly leaves time for me to soak in what I am about to experience. Once across the border and on a flight to Bella Coola it starts to sink in.  A couple of other anglers on the flight, also headed to the Dean, ask me if I have been before…”no”…you have fished for steelhead right…”no”…have you fished a spey rod…”no”…you are about to be ruined, they say with an astonished grin.

They couldn’t have been more spot-on.  As a humble Wyoming trout fisherman, I am fortunate to spend time in a wide range of beautiful places and I get to fish more than I should probably admit.  None of that prepared me for the Dean.

The first time my reel started screaming with a hot chrome steelhead, within a stone’s throw from the ocean, I was forever changed. The sheer beauty of the place combined by the majestic power of the fish is something that stands alone in my realm of experience.

I have officially been spoiled, inspired and yes ruined…for all of that I am grateful.
