The first group of July brought Dana Sturn and the Speypages gang back to do battle with Dean Chinooks once more.
Dana, Mike and Shirley Walsh, Pat Wood, Jerry Mahoney, David Smith and John Cambria were met with continued high water, but strong numbers of fish in the river. Some of the group promptly found success while others flirted with it for several days. Mike Walsh, who last season was snake-bit for the first 5 days on landing a Dean River Chinook, suddenly had several on the beach in the first full day shift.
Steelhead numbers still proved to be here and there, and the continued high water made fish passage through the upper canyon difficult – upper river fishing reflected that early in the week. By week’s end, however, several fresh steelhead were beached above the falls, and well as below.
The week’s best Chinook pushed 30 pounds.
