Getting In and Out of a Jet Boat

It seems pretty simple, but bad things can happen when people get in and out of boats carelessly!

What’s the most common cause of broken rods at Alaska West?  Anglers losing their balance on the way into a boat, resulting in errant boots impacting rods.  By far.

What’s the most common cause of (thankfully minor) injuries?  Feet getting hung up on gunwales and anglers tumbling every which way.

Take your time!  You’re wearing waders and clunky boots.  You’re probably tired.  You’re probably excited.  You’ve probably got your hood up and your glasses on, and you’re probably achy from fighting all those fish.

The best way to get into a sled like ours at Alaska West is really simple and effortless, and it works every time.

  1. Sit down on the front deck.
  2. Rotate your legs over the gunwale.
  3. Stand up.

That wasn’t hard, was it?  On the way out of the boat, do it all in reverse.

To drive the point home, we roped Justin Jackson, one of our guides, into a little video demonstration.

NOTE: If you’re viewing this in a newsletter or a reader, click here to see Justin enter a jet boat on YouTube.

This is not the time to be a hero!  Get in and out of a jet boat the easy way – your rods and your body will thank you.
