Geographic Harbor

Katmai National Park is still considered a living laboratory.

It was the spectacular eruption in 1912 of the Novarupta volcano that brought scientists and researchers to this area. The National Geographic Society led a number of expeditions to Katmai, and in 1919 on its last expedition, Geographic Harbor was discovered in the previously uncharted Amalik Bay. Part of the “Katmai coast,” this is one of the prime areas in this region for bear viewing.

As the only outfitter allowed to seasonally anchor inside Geographic Harbor, our guests are blessed with the best shallow water Halibut, Ling Cod and Rockfish areas in Alaska. The flight over the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes, inside Katmai National Park, and the myriad of Alaskan glaciers is worth the trip by itself. With two 26-foot Hewes Craft boats waiting, we are set up perfectly for comfortable days fishing the salt. The short exciting ride to the fishing grounds is dotted with seals, otters, innumerable sea birds, and often a panoramic display of whales. Whale watching in Katmai National Park is an exciting experience.
