What’s Happening with Pebble Mine- Good News for Alaska

Commercial Fishermen Do Not Need A Mine. Photo- Courtesy of Trout Unlimited

On January 30, 2023, The United States Environmental Protection Agency issued a Final Determination or, final Clean Water Act safeguards for the headwaters of Bristol Bay in an effort to stop and regulate the flow of mining waste into streams and rivers. The Clean Water Act safeguards are one critical piece in the puzzle to permanently protect Bristol Bay.

This choice follows more than ten years of local activism. Bristol Bay residents, including subsistence, recreational, and commercial fishermen, initially asked for safeguards for the area in 2010. Since then, they have been backed by solid evidence and 4 million public responses from advocates around the country who recognize the importance of this location.

We recognize that there is still more work to be done to permanently conserve Bristol Bay even as we celebrate the significant accomplishment made today in preserving a world-class fishery.

Visit www.savebristolbay.org/take-action to express your gratitude to the EPA and discover what Bristol Bay’s future holds.

Over half a million of you weighed in voicing your support for the Clean Water Act safeguards. To all of you, Thank you.
