Our stomachs are stuffed full of turkey. We’ve loaded our credit cards with Black Friday purchases. Time to fully move into Christmas mode, right?
Not quite.
If you’ve forgotten about the last day in the string of post-Thanksgiving shopping, let us remind you. Giving Tuesday falls on December 3rd this year, and we look forward to donating to Trout Unlimited’s Save Bristol Bay campaign. Our friends in Alaska are working hard to fight the proposed Pebble mine – a plan to build the largest open-pit copper and gold mine in the headwaters of a world-class fishing region.
With rivers chock full of the largest sockeye salmon runs on the planet (as well as king salmon, massive rainbow trout and other coldwater species), Bristol Bay is a bucket list destination for anglers worldwide. Sound science and mining experts have agreed that a mine of the size and type of Pebble’s proposal would negatively impact the heath of the Bristol Bay fishery, and would harm the 15,000 fish- based jobs in the region that contribute to a $1.6 billion industry. Bristol Bay is not the place for a project like Pebble, and the sportfishing community is one of the best defenders for the resources there that are threatened.
On behalf of anglers, fishing guides, lodge owners, pilots and others in the Bristol Bay recreational fishery, Save Bristol Bay has led efforts to stop the proposal for nearly a decade. But as the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers fast tracks the permitting review process for Pebble, fish advocates are facing an uphill battle in 2020 to hold off the mine altogether. They need our help to ensure that Bristol Bay continues to be a powerhouse fishery for many years to come. Read more about Pebble, the process, and upcoming challenges on the Save Bristol Bay blog.
Save Bristol Bay delivers the sportfishing voice and perspectives directly to decision makers in Washington, launches communication campaigns against Pebble, and has recently taken the Environmental Protection Agency to court. These strategies have kept Bristol Bay protected thus far. They can continue, but only with your help.
This Giving Tuesday, we ask you to consider donating to groups like Save Bristol Bay who are working to make sure that wild places like Bristol Bay continue to thrive. At the end of the day, if there isn’t clean water and intact habitat, it doesn’t matter what new rod you have or how solid your waders are constructed. Landing that massive rainbow trout of our dreams depends on standing up for the places we love.
