Gear We Love // Thunderhead Submersible Sling Pack

Photo: Cooper Hopkins

Fishpond’s new Thunderhead Submersible Sling Pack is the waterproof bag I have been waiting for. Whether you want a pack to carry everything you need for a day wading the flats or an easily accessible dry bag while floating your home rivers, you will not be disappointed with this bag.  The pack is made with a bombproof TPU coated nylon fabric that is derived from recycled commercial fishing nets. The waterproof TIZip makes the main pocket fully submersible, not just water resistant.  Like all waterproof zippers, it does require two hands to open but coated webbing pull tabs were added to aid in the process. The pack also comes with a tube of T-Zip lube to ensure the zipper stays as smooth as possible after multiple days of use.

My main issue with fully submersible bags is a lack of organization as it is difficult to sew in extra pockets while keeping the bag waterproof. Fishpond has helped address that by including an interior “envelope” type pocket to store smaller items such as a cell phone, sunglass cleaner or anything else you want to keep separate from the inevitable sand/dirt/grime that will find it’s way into the pack after a few days use.

The pack is super comfortable on your shoulder and even has attachment points for the Quick Shot Rod Holder so that you can carry a second fully rigged rod while wading the flats. For the freshwater angler, the pack also offers a net slot along the back which allows a Nomad Net to easily be carried. Beyond that, the pack does offer a shoulder fly patch and ample attachment points to clip on water bottles, tippet spools, nippers, zingers, or anything else you want to keep on the outside of the pack for quick access. This pack is offered in two different colors, Yuca (a salty green) and Shale (a neutral grey). The bag retails for $229.95 which is easy to justify when you think of the amount a new phone costs when you trust a bag that is just water “resistant.”

This is one of many Fishpond products I am proud to own and can say I have never been let down with the quality and functionality of this product. As with all Fishpond products, it is covered with a lifetime warranty showing that if you invest in this bag, Fishpond will stand behind their materials and craftsmanship. We would highly recommend this pack for any on water adventures!
