6 Reasons to Fish at Alaska West in July

Alaska Fishing in July
Did we mention we have a lot of fun out there? Photo: Tracy Moore

We think July is a really awesome time to go fishing at Alaska West.  Here are 6 reasons why.

6 Reasons to Fish at Alaska West in July

  1. King salmon on swung flies.  Yes, ‘peak king fishing’ starts in mid-June but they keep coming in all through July.  In fact, the past few years some of our best king fishing has happened during the first two weeks of July.  King seasons normally closes on July 25th.
  2. Meep, meep, meep.  Mousing for rainbow trout is fantastic in July.  Our leopard ‘bows are super hungry and they love crushing mammal patterns.
  3. Aloha!  Well, actually it might be 40 degrees and it might be 80 degrees – this is Western Alaska, after all – but in most years we get our best weather in July.
  4. Fun for the whole family.  Dad can pull hard on giant king salmon, Mom can coax fat rainbows out of root wads, and Junior can catch dolly after dolly on his 4 weight.  There’s so much action and so much variety that we love recommending July for family groups.
  5. Big two-hander, little two-hander.  We think spey fishing is kind of a big deal.  We run a spey instruction program with the best teachers in the world.  Where else can you swing your 9 weight spey rod for kings in the morning and then fish your 5 weight switch rod for trout in the afternoon?
  6. Less DEET.  Yes, there are bugs in Alaska.  July – especially mid-July and later – lies between ‘peak mosquitoes’ early on and ‘peak no-see-ums’ later on.  Being on the river with the fewest bugs of the season doesn’t hurt things at all.

We actually have some group openings at Alaska West for July 2013.  If this program sounds like fun to you, drop us a line – we’d love to tell you more.

    7. Fishing at Alaska West in July is great! Don’t forget Sockeye and Chums. Just let your line swing all the way down if you need a tug. Perfect for anglers learning to spey and anyone who likes getting lots of pulls. Its like Steelhead fishing with…oh there’s another one…and another…and…

How far is this good rainbow area east of Anchorage? I mean, how much travel /distance by car to get into the area you caught such magnificent rainbows?

and would you suspect the good fortune for rainbows would run into Aug, when I plan to be there with my sons?

Congrats on your successful trip, for sure.

Much appreciated if you can get back.
