Trout Spey Program at Alaska West

Spey Instruction

You may have heard that we run a really popular spey instruction program during the heart of our king salmon season at Alaska West.  Some of the best spey instructors in the world – this year the lineup includes Charles St. Pierre, Tom Larimer and Brian Niska – join us on the river and they work with our guests on their spey casting, in both group and one-on-one formats.

Spey Fishing for Trout

The past few years we’ve seen an explosion in the number of folks interested in fishing lightweight two-handed rods for trout.  That’s for good reason – in fisheries like ours where big trout love swung flies, switch rods and small spey rods provide  a really effective way to cover the water and have more fun doing it.  Recent advances in lightweight spey technology – rods, but especially short heads – have made spey fishing for trout productive and pretty darned easy.

Trout Spey Program at Alaska West

For all those reasons, we’re excited to announce that this year we’ll be running a Trout Spey program at Alaska West this summer, from July 20 to 27.  We’re presenting this program with Howard Cole from High Country Flies in Jackson Hole.  Howard was an instructor for André Puyan’s Fly Fishing school on the Henry’s Fork for a number of years.  He’s now a great resource on two-handed rods and techniques, especially focused on trout.

Just like during our spey instruction weeks earlier in the season, we’ll offer spey instruction on smaller rods in group and individual formats, and our guests will get 10 hours each day on the water chasing leopard rainbow trout and salmon too!  You can read more about the program right here.

If you’re interested in fishing two-handed rods for trout and want to experience one of the most productive fisheries in the world, you should drop us a line to learn more about our 2012 Trout Spey program!
