Alaska West Fishing Report: July 29 – August 5

Alaska Rainbow Trout

This week we welcomed back a bunch of past guests and some rookies as well.

Jeep Cochran brought back her son Jack after a multi year sabbatical and grandson Henry saw the river for the first time. David and Nathan Phalen joined us again for another great father and son trip. Jeff Kovach brought another group of guys for a short trip of salmon and trout fishing. These guys had to get at it quick since they only had three days to fish before they all had to head home. Deneki Outdoors owner Andrew Bennett showed up for a few days of fishing and hanging out with friends. Brian Pitser from The Northern Angler also joined us for a week of fishing in hopes of taking his knowledge home to book future trips with us. Andrea Sommerfeldt joined us for a week of hanging out (and fishing) with her boyfriend and Assistant Chef Rob Rubino.

The silver fishing started to pickup this week though the guests still had to work for them at times. With tides building through the week we had more and more silvers on each tide with many more soon to come. The river came up a bit this week which also helped in slowing down the march of the silvers. Most started to pile up in the lower river sloughs and soft pockets of the main river.  We started to catch silvers on top water this week as well which is always a sign that fishing is getting good.

The trout and dolly fishing was outstanding the whole week no matter where you fished. The lower Kanektok kicked out a few really large fish while dredging and the upper produced some really good mousing for guys that wanted to sight fish. The dollies were pretty crazy this week with anglers catching as many as they could ever want. Some big dollies were caught as well, with a couple in the high 20 inch range. Overall, we had great fishing that was consistent all week, every day!

The weather this week was more tolerable than we expected after how bad it was the week prior. We had rain, wind, clouds, sun and even some bugs just to keep us all on our toes. This week you were either putting on or taking off layers to keep comfortable.

We’ve got a bunch of photos from this week posted in this Facebook photo album.
