The story for week 6 was that the kings just kept coming in! Normally this week is known as a great Grand Slam week, but this year it turned out to be a very good week for kings.
This week we welcomed people from as close as Anchorage and as far away as New Zealand. Vince Moores and Russell Lister joined us all the way from the South Island and were a pleasure to have in camp. It was great to see the excitement in them after every day on the water.
We welcomed back John Baskin who has been fishing with us a bunch that last couple years. He originally had 4 weeks booked at Alaska West in the same season and almost pulled it off until health issues kept him from coming back for the last two weeks. We also had a few family and friends of our Alaska West staff join us this week which made for good times.
John Baskin had the most memorable fish of the week when he finally tied into a beautiful hen king, totally chrome, and battled her to the shallows for a quick photo and a release, all on the spey. Nice fish for a guy that has worked hard for them.
Russell and Vince both got into really nice kings, some landed, some not and a whole bunch of other fish. They fished the Arolik for bows and the upper Kanektok as well and had great days. I think they were blown away! Our accountant Kellsey Perkins joined us for the week and had quite the time catching all the species she could. She caught a really nice bow on the Arolik with that incredible leopard look and so many salmon at times that it probably turned into work. Jacob Reid came to hang out with his brother Alaska West staff member Kelsey Reid and do a little fishing. He caught some huge kings, tons of chum, some really nice bows and he was able to catch up with his brother in a great place.
The weather was pretty tolerable though it did fight us a few times. We surely had a bunch of rain, but it really did nothing to raise the river level, yet. The forecast is for similar weather, the mixed bag, so to speak. And the fishing turned out to be a mixed bag as well which is just perfect for this time of year.
