Toyota Hilux – Why We Love You

So much to love.
So much to love.

Our vehicle of choice at Chile West is the Toyota Hilux.

Oh Toyota Hilux, here’s why we love you.

  • You’ve got 4 wheel drive, and you go pretty much anywhere.
  • You’ve got a turbo diesel engine that runs forever.
  • You’re not huge but you’ve still got 4 real doors and a back seat that actually works.
  • You carry an awful lot of gear in back and on top.

Oh Toyota Hilux, there’s one thing we hate about you.

  • We can’t buy you in the States.

Good to see the Hilux getting its due. If they made those available in the States, I’d by one yesterday.

What is the deal? Why can’t we get a light truck in diesel? Or is there a way? Have it shipped for delivery? Or does that add too much cost due to tarriffs and such? What about driving one of those bad-asses from Chile to the U.S.? I know that would be fun, but would it be worth it? Or perhaps it’s a matter of buying a Hilux or a Tundra, minus the engine and dropping in a new diesel. All I know is this: our LT options in the states suck and so does the gas mileage and lifespan of the engine we’re putting up with.

Agreed. A light diesel truck would sell like hotcakes. We wants one.

LOVE the Hilux; had one (& a driver) assigned to me last month on my project in Africa. Older model, 2.8L Diesel. Runs forever, nothing overly fancy, practical moving parts made to last or to fix with bailing wire (like door handles or tailgate latches).

Stepped of the plane back home & was on ebay looking for one within a day…..with no luck…
