Let Your Guide Pick Your Fly

It’s time for another Universal Fishing Tip – pointers that are useful anywhere in the world you go fishing.

When you’re headed out for a day in a new fishery, show your guide your fly box and ask what they think you should fish.  You might be the best angler in the world, but you’re out with a guide for a reason – they probably know that water a lot better than you do.

But don’t just tie on the guide’s choice and leave it at that.  Ask a few questions.

  • Why that fly?
  • What others do you like?
  • Which of my flies do you hate?
  • What if it was cloudier/sunnier/dirtier water/a different tide?

Getting some input from your guide on the contents of your fly box can teach you an awful lot about the water you’re fishing, and make your time on the water a lot more productive.  That’s what they’re there for!
