Alaska West Fishing Report: August 14 – 21

This week we welcomed back quite a few long-time guests of Alaska West.

Guys like Mac and Greg Miller, John Amiro, John Carbone, Pete and Craig Durno and Family, Ken Plank, Jeb Curelop, Bud Fogel, Jim Coleman and Bob Carr have been with us many times and hopefully many more to come.

We also welcomed a few new people to the Alaska West family whom we hope to see back for many years to come. Joni, Steve and Gabriel Botha came all the way from South Africa to experience a trip of a lifetime and then some. Past guest Vern Olson hooked up (literally) Chris and Greg Hinton with an all-expenses paid trip for a week of fishing with us as gratitude for many years of service. Ken Plank convinced Shawn Cheadle to come up for an epic week of salmon and trout fishing and now he’s hoping to bring himself back again next year after the experience he had this week.

Overall the fishing was stellar for all species this week and many of the long-time guests seemed to think that the silvers this year were larger and in bigger numbers than they had seen for quite some time. We like to hear that! It was quite easy this week to fill a fish box full of Kanektok treasure and still have enough time to catch a whole lot of rainbows and dollies.

We thought the fishing last week was good for big bows, but this week turned out even better. Quite a few fish over 25″ were landed this week with two over 29″.

The weather this week was not very nice with only a few moments of sunshine throughout. Not a lot of rain, but mostly overcast and cool with a bit of wind. It did help with the bug problems we have had lately so maybe it was a good trade. The cool cloudy weather surely helped with the consistency of the silver fishing which is always a bonus and it never seemed to dampen the quality of the trout and dolly fishing either. Some of the guests were quite happy with the cool weather since they soon had to go back to some really hot stuff!
