One of the most popular drinks at the Slack Tide Bar at Andros South is a Bahamas classic – the rum and tonic.
If you’re new to the Bahamas, the combination might sound a little strange, but think about it– it’s a Caribbean nation so that means there’s rum around, and it’s a former British colony so that means there’s tonic around.
The recipe is pretty simple.
- Place ice in glass
- Squeeze a couple of lime slices in said glass
- Add dark rum (or anejo rum, but never light rum)
- Add tonic
- Raise your glass to the giant bonefish you landed today

Has to be Mount Gay Rum though – only way to go for the rum and tonic!

Agreed that Mount Gay is also an excellent choice – none was handy!

This sounds so good. I will have to try it. I agree, I thought it sounded odd at first. I usually drink gin & tonic with a splash of pineapple juice, I never thought of combining rum with tonic.

I tried this last night and it was amazing. I usually drink Gin, Tonic & Lime but I got curious last night and I’ve been experimenting since putting together a mini-bar. Mount Gay is what I had on hand and it was delicious. Likely my new goto drink.

We have been drinking this for years! Rum and tonic during the hot summer and gin and tonic during the winter. Lots of lime and nothing can beat it!

We’ve been on a “Dark and Stormy” kick for awhile. Maybe our Friday 4 o clock work cocktail time will have to give this one a try.

Do it Chris – you won’t regret it!

I love this discussion…this section is talking about food and drinking and local adventures in both… I love to fish but that is only part of the interest… the planning and tying or buying flies…chatting at the fly shop..gathering and better purchase of gear…all wonderful but the locals and the food / drink are very special.. I have been visiting the Bahamas since 1963… then as a kid… my all time favorite is (fried and pounded) Cracked Conc… on a bed of lettuce …some peas and rice on the side…of course hot sauce… a Rum drink or Kalik to ease the sunburn….
