We haven’t run a contest in a while. We have some extra Abel nippers floating around. It’s bonefishing season. We love haiku.
Hey, let’s run a bonefish haiku contest and send the winner a free set of Abel nippers!
Contest Rules
- Submit a haiku about bonefish or bonefishing via a comment on this blog post. What’s a haiku? See below.
- On Saturday, November 17th we’ll pick our favorite entry and send its author a pair of the badd-est ass nippers we know – the ones from Abel.
Bonefish Haiku
A haiku is a 3-line poem, with lines consisting of 5 syllables, 7 syllables and 5 syllables. It doesn’t have to rhyme. Here’s an example.

I’m so glad you ate my fly

beneath dancing blue
water and sky is treasure –
aye – silver and gold
Gray rain clouds all week
One moment sun color glows
There! Forty feet- tails
Twitch fly, he sees it
Take it, take it, twitch- oh no
What did I do wrong?
Walking, stalking flats.
Orange tan charlie flutters.
Silver lighting strikes.
Cast at tailing fish
Hooked Aquaman in throat
Husband screamed in pain
Silence as I wade
Stalking the ghost of the flat
Screeming reel, YEAH!
Can you believe this
So many poets love fish
Way to go anglers
I crafted that fly
Long cold winter, thoughts of spring
Long wait for you, fish.
—–
We met, you and I
On the pale moonlit evening
Of your final dance
—–
My fingers still burn
But not from that blasted sun
The Zorro of fish
—–
Squinting for silver,
Zzzip! You rip my line away
Here we go again!
Question who caught who?
Never truly a release
An image remains
ask are we able
and if hungry to connect
with fish and nippers….
Aargh – all hands on deck.
Man the oars – prepare the plank –
it’s captain bonefish!
Pink Pig Lips searching
Crazy Charlie awaits you
Anxious my hands shake
White sand under foot
Tacklebusters lurking near
Cast then, if you dare
Tail wagging, there you are
Gotcha in hand, I stalk you
It’s Man versus Fish
Might have issed the nippers but here a my thoughts anyway
Sand, toes, sun so bright
Arm spent – need advil tonight
Thanks pal, what a fight.
Sand, toes, sun so bright
Arm spent – won’t rest til tonight
Thanks friend Dynomite!
silence interrupted
from the ocean floor she burst
the ghost gone
You can’t cast for me
The wind is blowing too hard
You can’t double haul
Oh Speedy one
Bring my Fly Back Two
Me With You
Oh Speedy One You
Bring Back My Fly To Me With
You Under The Burning Sun
Oh Speedy One You
Bring Back My Fly To Me With
You Pushed By The Wind
Oh Speedy One You
Bring My fly Back To Me with
You Under The Burning Sun
Oh Speedy One You
Bring My fly Back To Me With
You With The Blowing Wind
Oh Speedy One You
Bring My Fly Back To Me With
You Pushed By The Wind
