Fly Tying Tutorial: How To Tie The Hippie Stomper

This session of fly-tying is brought to you by the guys at Mossy’s Fly Shop, where they pride themselves on not only premier fly fishing, rods, reels, lines, and other accessories but also providing high-quality fly-tying materials and teaching fly-tying techniques to both novice and experienced fly anglers. Whether you’re new to fly fishing or think you could have taught Brad Pitt how to fly fish, Mossy’s Fly Shop has got everything you need.

When you are traveling to different locations to chase trout, you always want to have some of your “Go-To Patterns” that you use on your home waters.  These are the patterns that you know how to fish and that you have confidence in. For me, one of those is Andrew Grillos’s Hippie Stomper.

Andrew basically created a renovation of the Humpy, but it also dubs as a great terrestrial pattern as well.  This pattern is simpler to tie, utilizes the moose for floatation and tracking, has foam to help floatability and is far more visible for those that find it hard to find and their fly.  With the foam, this pattern works great when you are fishing a dry dropper setup.

Tie some of these up in various colors and sizes

Originator: Andrew Grillos

Tied By: Brian Davenport, Mossy’s Fly Shop

Photos By: Mike Brown, Mossy’s Fly Shop

Ingredients:

  1. Hook: Firehole 618 6-18 (Original Pattern uses TMC 3761 6-18)
  2. Thread: Veevus V70
  3. Tail: Moose Body Hair
  4. Over Body: 2 Layers of Foam
  5. Under Body: Holographic Flashabou
  6. Wing: McFlylon
  7. Hackle: Grizzly
  8. Legs: Round Barred

Step 1.  Start your thread and wrap it to the start of the bend.  Get a small clump of moose hair, stack the tips and make a tail appx the length of the hook shank. Tie in and secure.

Step 2. Cut two strips of foam appx the width of the hook gape.  Tie in your top color.

Step 3. Tie in your bottom piece of foam.

Step 4. Take 2-3 strands of your flash and tie in.

Step 5.  Using the flash, wrap the under body.  Stop the body appx mid hook shank.

Step 6.  Pull the first foam strip forward and tie down.

Step 7. Pull the second foam strip over and tie down.  Wrap your thread forward to appx one hook eye width back of eye.

Step 8. Pull both strips of foam forward and tie down.

Step 9. Cover the entire segment of foam with your thread between the first and second tie in points of the foam.

Step 10. Tie in your rubber legs on each side.

Step 11.  Tie in your McFlylon

Step 12. Tie in your hackle

Step 13.  Wrap your hackle forward, use as many turns as you can possibly get in.  The more hackle, the better the floatability.  Bring the thread under and back the front.  Build a small head and whip finish.

Step 14. Trim the foam, McFlylon, rubber legs and the hackle tips on the underbody.

Other Flies To Tie:

  • Purple Haze
  • Foam Stimulator
  • Jigged Frenchie Hot Spot
