The Mohair Leech is a super simple tie but don’t let its simplicity fool you. It is a versatile pattern works just about anywhere and is effective in a variety of water sheds including lakes making it a standard must have fly in every angler’s box. Trying tying it in a variety of natural colors.

Originator: Jack Shaw & Mike Andreasen

Tied By: Mike Brown, Mossy’s Fly Shop

Ingredients:

  1. Hook: Firehold 839 Sz 6
  2. Beadhead: 3/16 Copper
  3. Lead Wire: .025
  4. Tail: Olive/Brown Marabou Tip
  5. Body: Wapsi Leech Yarn Sculpin Olive
  6. Thread: Veevus 140 Brown

Step 1.  Place your beadhead on the hook and wrap your lead wire, this fly had 17 wraps.  Push the lead wire in to the back of the beadhead to help secure it forward.

Step 2. Start your thread behind the lead wire, build a small base then cover the lead and take your thread back to the bend in the hook.

Step 3. Using a marabou plume, make your tail about the length of the hook shank.  Tie the marabou in and secure it down.  Trim off excess.

Step 4. Use two strands of Krystal Flash and tie in down each side of the tail.

Step 5.  Tie in your leech yarn.

Step 6.  Wrap the leech yard forward with touching wraps.  Sweep the long fibers back with each turn.  Wrap forward to the back of the beadhead, make a couple extra turns to make the beadhead tight.  Tie off and whip finish.  Using a stiff bristle brush, comb out any trapped fibers.  Trim hair if desired.

Other Flies To Tie:

  • The Impersonator Leech
  • String Leech
  • The Skulpzilla
