Fly Tying: Barr’s Bouface

Barr’s Bouface

Originally for warm water species bass and pike, John Barr got a hankering that a smaller version would be effective for trout.  He wasn’t wrong. Everything about this fly is a great all-around pattern. It has movement and action. In addition, with the type of materials you use for this particular fly pattern, you can change the colors, making it as versatile as the fedora you have in your closet rack. But unlike your fedora, this fly will work for you.

Originator: John Barr, of course.

Tied By Brian Davenport. Photos By Mike Brown with Mossy’s Fly Shop.

Materials Needed:

  • Hook: Firehole 718  Sz 8
  • Beadhead: Firehole 4.0mm Silver Tungsten
  • Tail: Black Pine Squirrel
  • Wing: Black Pine Squirrel
  • Flash: Peacock Black Krinkle Mirror Flash
  • Collar: Black Marabou
  • Head: UV Black Ice Dub
  • Thread: Veevus 8/0

Step 1.  Slide your bead onto the hook and place it in a vise.  Tie in the squirrel, making the tail approximately the length of the hook shank.

Step 2. Pull the squirrel tight along the top of the hook shank and tie it down approximately one hook eye behind the bead.

Step 3. Tie in two strands of flash down each side.  Trim it to length.

Step 4. Tie in a clump of marabou on the top of the shank, and adjust the marabou to the bend of the hook.  Repeat this step on the bottom.  Trim off the excess.

Step 5.  Using the Ice Dub, make a small head.  Tie off and whip finish.

Other Flies You Should Tie:

  • Purple Haze
  • March Brown
  • Micro Sculpin
