Alaskan Gold: Arctic Char

Team Deneki’s Amelia with a beautiful Char

One of the more sought-after fish in Alaska is the Arctic Char. Having many of the same attributes as both salmon and trout, fight like trout and get as large as the largest salmon, and look pretty doing it. Often confused with its cousin Dolly Varden because it takes close examination to tell the difference between the two.

Generally, Arctic Char sports larger spots and a deeper forked tail. They also have a narrow caudal peduncle ( the space before the tail fin) than Dolly Varden does. They also sport different spawning colors than Dolly Varden – rocking golds, orange, yellow, and rose colors versus more deep reds and pinks. They also get larger than Dolly Varden. Arctic Char is a great game fish. Fun to fish for and put up a great fight.
