Gear Review: Tacky Pescador Fly Box

If you’ve read our blog for a while, it’s no surprise we at Deneki Outdoors are fans of Tacky Fly Storage Boxes. Mindful design, thoughtful materials, and straightforward usability give Tacky Boxes an edge over some other fly box companies. Tacky’s newest fly box series, the Pescador, carries Tacky’s “Better Box” mantra with a solid, versatile, and well-thought-out fly storage box.

The Tacky Pescador Fly Box Series comes in three sizes, extra-large, large, and standard. All Pescador Fly boxes feature the patented waterproof gasket, easy yet secure opening to access your flies, and are weatherproof to keep your flies dry. The fly size spectrum is impressive, particularly with Extra Large and Large sizes. More impressive than that is the sheer capacity of the Extra Large and Large-sized boxes. In addition, the Extra Large and Large have optional, sold separately, leaflets to increase the capacity. Leaflets integrate into the boxes and feature a magnet system to help keep things secure.

Here is our breakdown of each size of the Tacky Pescador Fly Boxes:

The Tacky Pescador XL Fly Box is a new way to transport the kitchen sink. Many of us can’t help but take all the flies we have. The Pescador XL Fly Box allows you to do just that. It is the box to transport all your flies, whether you’re preparing for a fishing expedition worldwide or simply seeking the best box to hold all your flies in your boat while floating on your favorite water. There’s no better way to keep your largest arsenal of bugs and baitfish than with a massive carrying capacity of up to 464 flies, and that is without the insert Leaflet (sold separately). This fly box has an enormous capacity of up to 1076 flies with the optional Leaflet. If you need to carry more than 1000 flies, you might have a problem. Just saying.

The Tacky Pescador Large Fly Box is a favorite at our Andros South Lodge as it makes for the ideal bonefish box. Super durable construction and the waterproof gasket will keep your flies dry and secure over the course of a full day out on the flats. Of course, it will work well in any freshwater application. You can fill it up with streamers, dries, and nymphs, so you have your entire arsenal of flies for the whole day. It will even fit in some slings and packs.

The Tacky Pescador Standard Fly Box is the “go-to” of “go-to” fly boxes. With a fly capacity of 210, it can carry all the dries, hoppers, and nymphs your need on your day out on the river, yet it is versatile enough to fit your steamers. If it matters, it is the only Pescador Fly Box where you can choose an alternative color.

Pros of the Tacky Pescador Fly Boxes

  • Made with 100% recycled plastic
  • Easy open, yet secure, no latch design
  • Gasket style ring rather an O-ring for weatherproofing
  • Tacky self-healing silicone is better than styrofoam
  • Magnet system helps keep Leaflets in place

Cons of the Tacky Pescador Fly Boxes

  • Heavy – with durability and heavy-duty construction comes weight
  • Some Slots can be “sticky”
  • Lack of Color Options – The Standard Fly Box is the only one that has an alternative color option
  • Leaflet inserts are not as “easy” to put in and remove as described

In true Tacky fashion, the Pescador Fly Box Series embraces all the elements of a good fly box. We can’t speak of the Pescador’s longevity or durability yet. We will update the post when that does happen. Our initial reaction is the Pescador Fly Boxes make for great fly boxes for all fly anglers in all situations.
