Okay, let’s be honest. We intended to have Twelve Gifts for The Fly Angler, you know, because of the Twelve Days of Christmas. It was supposed to simple and easy. But with all the good submissions from our guides and staff, it wasn’t easy to widdle it down to only twelve. So, we had to add another list.
All items on this list are great, not only for The Fly Angler in your family or among your friends, but just great gifts for anyone. They say the best gifts are the ones you’d never buy yourself. We say “humbug” and “they” are wrong. These are gifts we’d enthusiastically buy for ourselves.
Every Day Carry Knife- and EDC or Every Day Carry, tool is called that for a reason. It’s because you’ll probably use it every day. Having a knife that is easy to use, safe, and easy to carry with you regularly is fantastic. If you have one, you know what we’re talking about. There are a lot of knife companies out there. Benchmade is one of the good ones. Like a lot of other gear, you get what you pay for. A knife is not something you should “go cheap” on. Benchmade is available in a lot of local shops. Please check there first.
Okay, we know what you’re thinking…frisbee? Really? Well…yes. Not only are frisbees fun to toss around, but according to one of our guides, they make great plates for shore lunches. Less expensive than some premium outdoor flatware, frisbees are also Lightweight, buoyant, and some even glow in the dark, making them easy to find. Functional and fun. The best combo. Frisbees are readily available in most areas. We recommend getting the more durable 175-gram weight.
Admittedly hacky sack is not for everyone. That being said, everyone should learn. Foot-eye coordination training is good for the body, balance, and brain. The very advanced both toss a frisbee at the same time! Inexpensive and readily available, hacky sacks make a great gift.
Coffee is great. When you’re out fishing, being able to make a nice hot cup of coffee is truly a blessing. The AeroPress Go Travel is the best of the original AeroPress ( a great gift in itself) but more portable. It comes in a self-containing container that doubles as a cup. We can’t emphasize enough how good a freshly brewed cup of coffee is on the river. The AeroPress makes it super easy to do so.
