Fly Tying: Christmas Wreath

It’s that time of year and what better way to share and spread some cheer by leveraging your fly tying skills this Christmas season. The Christmas Wreath Fly is perfect to add to Christmas Trees, gifts, and host gifts. Like a lot of other flies, you can change up colors and if you really want to get bougie, add some sparkle by gluing on red and silver beads and krystal chenille for tinsel. That’s guaranteed to make everyone’s eyes twinkle.

Tie and Photos by Mike Brown with Mossy’s Fly Shop in Anchorage, Alaska.

Materials List:

  • 14 Gauge Solid Core Wire
  • UV Life Flex Olive
  • Veevus 140 Black
  • Red yarn

Step 1: Using a round item, I used a Dyna King hook tray, form your wire around the site. Cut the wire a little longer to allow for connecting.

Step 2: Start your thread and glue.

Step 3: Tie in your life flex and run thread to other end of wire.

Step 4: Wrap your life flex material forward, a rotary vice makes this way easier.  Tie off and whip finish.

Step 5: Wrap the wire back around your template, this will help put it back in a round shape.  Bend the wire ends and hook together.  Crimp closed.

Step 6: Using your yarn or ribbon, tie a bow, and voila! Your Christmas Wreath Fly!

In addition, tie a few Christmas Tree Flies to really show off. Have fun and Merry Christmas!
