One of the best things about the fishing experience at Rapids Camp Lodge is not only the variety of fish you can catch but also how you fish. You can jet upstream the Naknek River, fly over, and fish the Nushagak River, a swinger’s paradise. Or you can fly out to the many hike-in locations for monster Char, Dolly Varden, and Rainbows. However, one often overlooked fishing experience is the Fly, Float & Fish program.
It’s a classic Bristol Bay fishing day. The floatplane is loaded with all the fishing gear plus a couple of rafts. Every rafting day begins with the floatplane being loaded up the gear and a couple of rafts. Then you fly off to one of several destinations that typically render everyone speechless. The day of fishing is usually a combination of wading gravel bars and using the raft as a water taxi transporting you to various spots on the river. Being able to traverse a stream on a raft bank to bank with relative ease to fish the other side is a major advantage.
We utilize a small raft for day trips as often as possible. It is a relatively easy, relaxing, and serene way of navigating some of the watersheds in Bristol Bay and allows you to cover much more water without completely wearing yourself out.
In conclusion, float fishing trips are a hoot and a great way to experience fishing regardless of where you are at. If you have an opportunity to go a float trip, do it.
