Perhaps more than any other fly, the Clouser fly pattern has been tweaked, tuned, and modified to fit a multifarious of freshwater and saltwater fisheries. The original Clouser by Tom Schmuecker and Bob Clouser, designed to run deeper in water, the Deneki’s Coho Clouser was modified with that in mind but for Coho Salmon, to get down fast and run deep.
At Alaska West, in the slower and deeper slots of the Kanektok River, Coho (Silver Salmon) tend to run underneath the schools of Pink salmon and Chum salmon, so you need a fly that will get down fast past the Pink and Chum salmon and stay down in the deeper water where the Cohos are. This is where the Deneki Coho Clouser was born. Similar to its cousin Clouser fly patterns, the Deneki Coho Clouser has a very jiggy and bait fishy action to it. Tested on the Kanektok River at Alaska West Lodge, Bristol Bay, and Kodiak, The Deneki Coho Clouser is a surefire fly that produces Coho Salmon.
If you’re planning on targeting Coho Salmon in Alaska, make sure this pattern is in your fly box. Happy Tying!
