Are you trout setting too much? We get it, it is muscle memory. You grew up setting the hook with the rod and that is a hard habit to change. This doesn’t mean the shame from your guide’s eyes are going to feel any better when you blow the fish though. Once you get into the salty water, trout sets are not allowed. No exceptions here. If you are having trouble breaking the habit, try holding your rod tip in the water. I don’t just mean low here, I mean actually in the water. Whether you are slowly crawling a shrimp fly on the bottom or quickly stripping a baitfish pattern, keep the rod tip so low that it is a couple inches in the water. Next time you have an eat, you will just keep stripping instead of raising the rod, I promise!
