Probably the most intimidating knot to tie but certainly one worth knowing. It is one of the only knots that does not weaken the line at all. The loop on a Bimini is actually stronger than the line itself. Our friends at netknots.com created the illustration above but if you click here then scroll down, they also created an animated diagram of the Bimini, which with a difficult knot like this, can be helpful to watch. I am by no means an expert Bimini Twister but a couple tips that I find make things a little bit easier: I do my twists with the loop around my big toe, this also helps with my second tip, which is to make sure you keep tension throughout the entire process. That is why I find it helpful to hold the loop over my big toe, then I still have two hands to finish the rest of the job while holding everything tight.
Even if you only tie a couple Bimini’s a decade, it is a knot that can be applicable in many different situations. Plus it is a good one to show off your skills at the Tiki Bar after a long day on the flats. Nothing says you have experience catching big fish like being able to quickly twist up a Bimini!
