Social Distancing Through Fishing

Social distancing is a serious matter right now and I don’t want this article to come off as we are encouraging people to avoid quarentiening. That being said, there are ways to leave the house while still being safely spread out from other people. A perfect example of this, go fishing! There are fishing opportunities available throughout the entire country right now and if you are able to avoid unnecessary travel, we say take advantage of them!

Pick a location where the fishing pressure is light and enjoy some much need time on the water. I’ve always lived by the mantra that fishing can fix any problem. The bigger the problem, the longer the fishing trip should be! Can’t make it to the river, here are some other things you can do to help pass the time.

  1. Tie flies. You know you will need them at some point this year, might as well put a little time in behind the bench now.
  2. Watch some fly fishing videos. I have been preferring the throwbacks recently, a little Trout Bum Diaries and Running Down The Man.
  3. Read some old Deneki Blog Posts. We have over 3,500 posts covering topics from saltwater fly fishing to gear reviews and fly tying. Fall into the rabbit hole that is Deneki.com

Most importantly, please stay safe and healthy. This will pass and we will be stronger for persevering. Anyone have any advice on other ways to pass the time? Please share!

Other Ways To Pass The Time:

  • Improve Your Backcast Presentations
  • Fly Tying Roundup
  • Spey Fishing

Yes, fishing is an ideal means of social distancing that gets us outside! Other related ideas:
    – practice casting, including making a “grass leader” for Spey casting practice.
    – reorganize your fly boxes
    – practice your knots to save time on the water
    – scout your local stream without a rod, really study the water
    – organize your gear, including adding hacks that help you to be more efficient on the water. For example, I’ve added rare earth magnets to my sling pack to make it easier to handle tiny flies while re-rigging.
