The 2019 Great Alaskan Heat Wave

It has been a warm one up here in Alaska this year.  3 different Alaskan cities experienced record high temperatures on the 4th of July, one of which was King Salmon, the home of our fly out lodge, Rapids Camp.  It reached 89 degrees on Independence Day this year (for your reference, the average high temp on July 4th is 75 degrees.)  In order to escape the heat and this season of record breaking temperatures, we have been doing plenty of hikes in the Tundra.

The Tundra is a treeless biome where low temperatures lead to a short growing season for vegetation. In Alaska, the Tundra is also referred to as a “cold desert” but it is not barren of life or beauty. Here are some pics from Rapids Camp guide Patrick Frits, chasing some cooler temps in the Tundra.  Having 4 planes sitting outside our backdoor opens up plenty of fantastic fisheries for us to explore and keep our guests into fish! Doesn’t look like a bad place to experience a heat wave does it?

More from the Tundra:

  • Tundra Sunset
  • American the Beautiful
  • Low Gradient
