Mix It Up Out There!

Photo: RCL Guide Rob Rymph

It is so easy to get stuck in a grove on the water.  I do it all the time.  I have confidence in what I am using because it has worked before so I don’t switch things up very often.  When guiding I am the exact opposite.  If something that a client is using isn’t working, I change it up almost immediately.  The cool part is that I get to see the results of changing stuff up first hand.  If I am fishing on a day off I am convinced that I can make what I have on work, but I need to stop being so stubborn.  With clients, I obsessively change flies and micro manage their rigs and those changes, more often than not, get results!

This is just a friendly reminder to try something different.  Don’t be afraid to experiment out there!  Soon you will discover that fish will eat something and you cannot explain why…but that is okay!  One of my favorite bead colors to fish is chartreuse, even in clear water conditions.  Have you ever seen a natural, bright green colored egg?  I went through a period where I wanted to try and catch trout on saltwater flies.  I quickly learned this was actually an extremely productive way to fish!  We even have had guests go the other way with this experiment and catch bonefish, on trout flies! Moral of the story, have fun out there and mix it up, don’t be that stubborn fly fisherman that only fishes his confidence patterns. You never know what you may figure out!
