Former Alaska West guide Zac Cassill returned to the banks of the Kanektok River for the opening week of our 2019 season. Looks like his old stomping grounds welcomed him back nicely! This is one of many trophy kings landed on the swing that week. Zac also shared 3 reasons with us on why Week 1 at Alaska West is his favorite.
- Fresh, chrome fish pushing in every day. Imagine looking down pipeline or lower airport and seeing a 100 Kings porpoising up river together in a school, it looks like somebody is throwing bowling balls in the river. When a big push comes through it can be like silver salmon fishing, every cast is a bite.
- Alaska West is the only lodge guiding the river at that time, every run is open and the staff is chomping at the bit to be on the water. The river is noticeably quieter than later king weeks.
- The trout haven’t seen a fly in about 9 months and are dumb as a box of rocks. I would argue that it is comparable to the best rivers in the Russian far east at that time of the year. Grayling are also a bonus fish and can be in huge numbers in the right spot.
We will keep you posted on our Alaska and British Columbia Lodges as their season’s continue to progress!
