Guide Advice from Charlie Sweeting

When this legend speaks, you should listen..

When I am lucky enough to fish with a guide I make sure to absorb as much information from them as possible.  This is especially the case when fishing with one of the guides at Andros South which in my opinion are among the best flats guides in the world.  One day I was out with the 20 plus year veteran Charlie Sweeting and we were having one of those days I have come to expect (but never take for granted) when fishing Andros South.  By this I mean there was plenty of Bonefish slime on our hands as we were doing pretty well.  With the way the wind was blowing, we were drifting across the flat from the west to the east.  I was finishing up a battle with a nice bone before I leaned over the downwind side of the boat, popped my fly out and let the fish swim off.  After I did this, Charlie shared with me some advice I had never before heard.  He told me I should of released the fish on the other side of the boat (towards the direction we had just drifted over as opposed to the direction we were going to drift over in the near future.)  He told me that he doesn’t release the bonefish towards the direction we were going to fish shortly as he believes the fish will be acting different/tired which could alert the other bonefish that we hadn’t yet reached.  It is your choice here if you want to believe that something like this could make a difference in your success.  All I know is when someone like Charlie gives me advice on Bonefishing, I listen!  You can be sure for the rest of the trip I released all my fish away from the direction we were drifting.
