The Beauty is in the Details: The Adipose Fin

Photo: Danny Frank

The adipose fin is my favorite part of a nice sized trout.  It is often overlooked as people tend to focus on the color of the spots, the spotting pattern or the kype of the jaw.  Next time you catch a trout look at it’s adipose. It is usually the most colorful part of the fish.  When I am fishing by myself and land a nice fish, I snap a quick photo of its adipose. When looking through old photos, I can remember all the details of the fish by simply seeing a picture of its adipose fin.  Everyone is a little different and they are also a great indicator of the size of the fish.  When I hear about people who set up a camera with a self timer to get a grip n grin, I tell them to consider only taking a close up photo of the fish.  It is much healthier on them and still gets you some documentation for social media 😉 Besides, the fish are better looking than us anyway!
