When walking the flats, less can be more. I prefer to leave most of my gear back on the boat and just have the essentials with me. A good pair of pliers on my belt, a spool of tippet in my back pocket, and a hockey puck with a few different fly choices. The plastic pucks most fly shops give you with your fly purchase can easily fit under your buff. This will allow you quick access and it will keep your flies dry! This sounds uncomfortable but I promise you that you will not even notice it is there and better yet, will find it surprisingly convenient. The pressure from the buff holds the puck in place while also offering you easy access to your favorite flies. Just throw a couple different patterns or sizes in the puck, tuck it under your buff, and you are ready to roam the flats!
