Whether you’re stripping flies for salmon, trout, or bonefish, when fishing streamers the name of the game is action. The more action you’re able to impose onto your fly, or better yet, the more control you’re able to have over the action of your fly, odds are the more effective your fly is able to fish.
How do you increase the control you have over the action of your fly exactly? According to Alaska West guide, Lucas Young, it all starts with the grip.. Allow us to explain.
When stripping flies, applying firm pressure with the thumb on the top of the handle allows the rod tip to stay low toward the surface of the water with minimal play. Without such pressure, the weight of the line can cause the rod tip to dance, absorbing the energy of the strip, which can reduce the amount of action of the fly. It also allows for the angler to lose connection to the fly which vastly reduces the control over the fly as it fished.
Instead, be sure to force that rod tip down with your thumb when stripping flies for maximum control over your fly. Trust us, it makes a big difference!
