Old Head Cement for Tougher Flies

fly tying tip- make use of old head cement
Liquid durability. Photo: Stuart Foxall.

A couple months back, our pal and world renowned fly tyer, Stuart Foxall, showed us a clever way to repair split jungle cock nails using old, overly tacky, and otherwise unusable head cement/varnish.

Stu recently showed us another use for that old tacky cement/varnish.. Adding durability to your flies!

Old cement/varnish in which the solvent has been allowed to evaporate over time is much thicker in consistency. Because of that, it makes much easier work of being applied under body materials like braids or tinsels (without squeezing through the materials) for much more durable flies. It also dries faster too, which can be a big help in order to complete the rest of the pattern.

So, don’t throw out that old bottle of cement/varnsih.. Put it to use!
