What’s Your Favorite Fly Tying Thread?

UTC Ultra thread
How about this one? Photo: Kyle Shea.

We’re less than a month away from the opening day of our summer seasons in Alaska and British Columbia. That means we’re spending a lot of time at the vise these days to fill our boxes for another great season, and we hope you are too!

Needless to say, we’ve got fly tying on the brain, and a recent debate inspired us to ask the question..

What’s Your Favorite Fly Tying Thread?

There are many, many thread options available today and we know many of you reading this blog are experienced fly tyers yourselves, and today we want to hear from you!

  • What’s your favorite fly tying thread?
  • Brand?
  • Size?
  • For what type of flies?

Leave us a comment below to help out your fellow tyers. Happy tying!

Veevus 10/0 and 14/0. Ideal for midges, tricos, and baetis. No bulk and really strong.

As a heavy handed tyer, I always use as heavy a thread as I can get away with. I especially like Danville’s Flat Waxed Nylon in 210 Denier. That works great down to about size 6 hooks. Ultra 140 and Danville 140 are next in line while Danville 6/0 Fly Master Waxed is hard to beat when tying smaller flies.

Veevus 10/0 Given my tying style it works best on all of my flies.

Maybe the question should be “favorite thread alternative” to fly shop thread. Just a thought.
